Orthodontic Services for Straighter Teeth and a Stronger Smile
Orthodontists are special dentists who specialize in aligning bites. Having a proper alignment adds cosmetic value, but it goes deeper than you might think. A misaligned bite is more difficult to clean, and it can wear down unevenly. Having a bite that isn’t properly aligned can also affect speech.
It’s recommended for children as young as 7 to begin seeing an orthodontist for an evaluation. This is the age when the first permanent molars and incisors begin to emerge, making it the perfect time for your orthodontist to assess if further treatment will be needed.
During the consultation, your child’s smile will be evaluated by our orthodontist. They’ll come up with a plan for guiding the future growth of your child’s permanent teeth and jaw, typically recommending two-phase treatment. This early treatment will help to:
- Regulate the upper and lower dental arches’ width
- Allow space for permanent teeth
- Prevent the need for permanent tooth extractions
- Reduce the likelihood of impacted teeth down the line
- Correct thumb-sucking
- Stop abnormal swallowing or speech problems
Many times immediate treatment is not necessary after the first consultation, but your orthodontist will be able to give you an idea of when treatment should begin.
Smile improvement isn’t just for kids and teens! Receiving orthodontic treatment as an adult can have a number of benefits beyond the cosmetic. Treatment can help correct a bad bite and crooked teeth that could lead to gum and bone loss, too much wear on teeth, headaches and jaw joint problems. And there are many orthodontic options available for adults, depending on your unique situation.
Common Orthodontic Options
Braces: Braces are the most common treatment for children, starting between the ages of 9 and 14. They usually need 1 to 2 years to do their job, though treatment time can vary.
Invisalign®: Invisalign is growing in popularity for adults receiving orthodontic treatment. It is a less visible and more flexible method than braces, though it does require more self-discipline and is not recommended for children. The treatment time needed is usually shorter than braces as well. Learn more.
Additional Orthodontic Options
Orthodontics go beyond just straightening your teeth. Some patients may also benefit from TMJ treatment and surgical orthodontics.
